Mission

Our belief is that, in a relaxed, nurturing, and playful multi-age setting where children are safely guided yet free to make their own choices, a child can enhance friendship making skills, try something new, learn from experience, and extend their interests and talents, all of which are critical life-long skills. Our goal is for every child to feel comfortable with whom she or he is, be respectful of all others and the environment, and grow strong, physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. We aim to assist every child in growing as an individual and as a member of the community.
To quote Piaget, "Play is children's work". We take that "work" very seriously.

Counselors

Fun in the Sun is staffed by experienced teachers and counselors. The counselors have themselves attended Fun in the Sun. This makes them especially qualified in that they are well known by the teachers and they have the advantage of truly knowing the program and its expectations.

Joey Bilyk

Hey! My name is Joey. I’m a 2011 University of Pittsburgh graduate and a Mt. Airy native.

Summer has been synonymous with Fun in the Sun since the days when I was an energetic kindergarten student running around Bonnie and Dora’s classrooms at Plymouth Meeting Friends.  I’ve stayed with the camp all these summers because Fun in the Sun gives campers the imaginative space to enjoy summer without the daily itineraries and detailed schedules of more regimented summer camps.

For me, the pool has always been the most important feature of summer time fun. As Fun in the Sun’s in house swimming instructor, I offer 30 minute one-on-one lessons to campers of all levels. My approach is kind and persistent with three goals of confidence, competence and fun.  I taught for the Abington YMCA in 2006-2007 and I’ve been holding lessons with Fun in the Sun since 2008. I spent 2012 abroad as a school teacher in Thailand and missed last year’s lessons so I’m excited to be back in the pool this upcoming summer!
